Topiwala National Medical College and B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital, shortened to Nair Hospital, was founded in 1921 through the establishment of the National Medical College. Nair Hospital was built in 1925 by Dr. A.L. Nair. The hospital is equipped with 1,300 beds and provides quality medical treatment to thousands of patients each year. Currently, the hospital has one pediatric oncology project and one maternal health project at this site. The institution boasts the oldest Gastroenterology department. It is also credited with many other firsts – like the Rheumatology and dermatopathology services in the city.

Nair Hospital is known for providing timely intensive care to patients. It is the center for teaching, service and research. Psychological services including EEG, ECT and psychotherapy (individual and group) are offered by the hospital. There are many other speciality services being offered for children, geriatric patients, and substance abuse. The geriatric services besides addressing common ailments such as depression and dementia, runs a caregiver support group.
