An endocrinologist is a specialist who treats people with conditions that are caused by problems with endocrine glands and hormones. The endocrine system consists of many glands (pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries and testes) that produce and regulate hormones. The body needs an appropriate balance of these hormones to work effectively. Hormones regulate a wide range of functions, such as: breathing, metabolism (which is how the body converts food into energy), sensory perception, movement, reproduction, fertility and growth.
