An ophthalmologist is a specialist who diagnoses and treats human eye and vision problems. They carry out eye examinations and vision tests and use the results to diagnose and treat eye infections and diseases.  An ophthalmologist may perform any of the following tasks on a daily basis:

• Conduct a comprehensive eye test of patients and assess their vision
• Prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses to correct vision
• Examine the condition of the retina, eye muscles and optic nerve
• Look for signs of cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, eye infection and other eye disorders
• Performing corrective surgeries, such as repairing injuries and corneas and removing cataracts.  After surgery, provide patients with post-surgery treatment.
• Provide oral and topical medication to treat eye diseases
